Estimate your tax refund
Income tax and resident tax come out of every payslip in Japan. If you sent money home to family who live outside Japan, you can claim them as dependents and get part or all of that tax back.
Read your Gensen slip
Your employer gives you the 源泉徴収票 at the end of the year or when you leave. The three numbers the calculator needs are printed in the top two rows and the bottom left box.

- 1 · 支払金額 is your total income for the year.
- 4 · 源泉徴収税額 is the income tax you already paid. This is the amount that can be refunded.
- 5 · 社会保険料等の金額 is your social insurance for the year.
Boxes 2 and 3 are worked out for you, so you do not need to type them in.
Why sending money home cuts your tax
Japan lets you deduct ¥380,000 of income tax base and ¥330,000 of resident tax base for every relative you support, even when that relative lives in another country. Most payroll offices never apply it, because you have to declare the family and prove the money left your account.
What counts as proof
- Remittance receipts for the year, from a bank or a transfer service, in your name.
- Birth certificates, marriage papers or a family book showing the relationship, translated into Japanese.
- A passport copy for each dependent.
We can file back five years. If you never claimed your family while you worked here, those years are still open.
