The maths

How the number is worked out

For the employees' pension, the lump-sum is your average standard monthly remuneration multiplied by a payment multiplier set by your contribution months. The multiplier rises in six-month steps, so paying one extra month can move you into the next band.

6 to 11 months × 0.5
12 to 17 months × 1.1
24 to 29 months × 2.2
36 to 41 months × 3.3
48 to 53 months × 4.4
60 months × 5.5

Multipliers move when the pension premium rate changes. We check the current table on the day we file.

Three things that change the result

  • Contribution months before April 2021 are capped at 36, even if you worked longer. Months from April 2021 on are capped at 60.
  • The pension office uses its own record of your standard remuneration grade, not your payslip average. Small gaps are normal.
  • National pension lump-sums come from a fixed table and have no tax withheld, so there is no second payment to claim.
